Unique Weathered Metal Pergola with Gabion Sides and Sedum Roof

Our biggest and boldest construction to date. The Pergola is unique and constructed from a substantial weathered steel framework, and rock-filled gabion sides, topped off with a living sedum roof.

The Pergola is a world away from the typical lightweight aluminium or the limited-life wooden gazebos. It is instead a permanent garden building made from steel and stone, able to withstand a lifetime of British weather. The high sides create a cosy inviting room sheltered from the elements and the living roof planted with low-maintenance sedums gives a naturalistic feel and softens the hard elements below.

If you are looking for a unique construction made from materials at the top of many designers’ wish lists, and with all the functionality you need, without looking pretentious or ornate, we don’t think you will find anything better than the Pergola.

What’s more, the price includes a full installation service.

More information about our pergolas

Designed and built by us, the Pergola, like our other products, is unique.

The gabion walls

These are metal wire baskets filled with stone, providing rain and wind protection. They also act as a natural “storage heater” by holding the heat of the day or from a fire pit, helping to create a microclimate as the temperature drops in the evening. To make your pergola even more intimate and scented, why not plant flowing climbers up the gabion baskets? Plants such as Wisteria, Honeysuckles, and Jasmine will be able to attach themselves to the gabions with no additional support.

The framework

The framework is made from 6mm thick steel with 120mm box section uprights set into a concrete foundation. The steel fascia is 150mm high.

The internal framework sizes are dependent on the span required. During construction, we use a combination of bolting and where bolt heads are unsightly, we weld.

The living roof

The strength of its construction has allowed us to include a living sedum roof. While the sedum roof is sympathetic to environmental concerns, it’s the aesthetic value we feel is the biggest advantage. The sedum’s foliage and flowers are visible rising from the roof when viewed from ground level, but it comes into its own when viewed from above. From upstairs windows of your or neighbouring properties, the pergola beds into natural surroundings and can even be hard to spot when surrounded by lawns and plants.

The sedum roof is supplied fully planted established and installed with all the growing medium it requires for life.

Pergola options

As 3A Steelworks is both the supplier and builder, we can be flexible with changes to the construction. To give you some ideas, we can…

– Offer bespoke sizes.

– Reduce the height of some or all of the gabion side to 0.5m to provide gabion seating around the perimeter.

– Include canvas curtains to all sides including the front to completely seal your pergola, in effect creating a gazebo, these can include windows.

– Omit the living roof, but retain the supporting roof bars for climbers to grow over to create an open roof pergola.

– Omit some or all gabion sides, so the structure can be accessed from all sides. You may decide to just keep a
tall rear gabion feature wall as a back to barbecue or an outside kitchen.

These are just some ideas on how we can customise your metal pergola. To discuss yours and obtain a bespoke quote, please get in touch.

FAQs about pergolas

Discover more about our unique steel pergolas with weathered gabion sides and a lush sedum roof. Durable, stylish, and eco-friendly, our gazebos can transform your outdoor space beautifully.

Typically, you won’t need planning permission for our garden pergolas as they fall within permitted development, that said, please be aware of the following restrictions. Firstly, the rules state that outbuildings, sheds etc should not take up more than 50% of the land around the original house.

Secondly, the maximum height allowed is 3 metres. However, if it is situated within 2 metres of your boundary, this is reduced to 2.5 metres. Our pergolas fall within both of these limits, so that’s not an issue.

There may be additional restrictions if you situated in an Area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), a national park or world heritage site so please get in touch before ordering if this applies to you.

In theory, we can construct any size. Please get in touch with your requirements.

Due to our fabrication capabilities we can cover most bespoke needs, for example, shelf brackets for the back gabion wall. We can offer brackets for lighting, canvas curtains for the sides to include clear window sections. We could even build a steel inset fire place into the back gabion wall.

Yes, we can supply all the materials for self installation, please enquire for a revised reduced price.

Typically, a pergola has an open roof and a gazebo is covered. The Pergola is more akin to a gazebo in this respect, however we feel the look and general construction (with the exception of the roof) is more akin to a pergola, so that’s what we are sticking with!

Here the line is a little more blurred and tends to be more down to aesthetics, a pagoda has its roots in Asia and as such tend to have a more oriental style sometimes multi-storey, they tend to be more monuments than utilitarian buildings.

Yes, providing the stone sizes are compatible with the gabion mesh size so they don’t fall through, we can work with it. There may be a variation on the cost.

Yes, we can look at different roof angle options, bear in mind however the shallow pitch of the roof may not lend itself to some options such as tiles or slates.

Yes, we can offer all galvanised steel for a silver/grey finish. Please enquire for a price on this.

No, but we can install the structure onto existing paving or hard surface.

We will send a client questionnaire, but queries generally centre around access and the existing site conditions.

We assume the site is cleared and ready for installation so growth, waste or materials will need to be cleared prior.

Typically, no. We may ask for a video call if there are any queries.

Our guarantee lasts for twenty years, but the design will remain looking good well beyond this timeframe.
